The "Ultimate" Video Game

Published Sunday 31st of May 2009

I've owned a PS3 for about a year now and even though there are some really fucking wicked games for the console there hasn't been one yet that I would consider ultimate.

It's a little like with mobile phones. One comes with an Mp3-player but another comes with FM-radio. One has DivX-support but one YouTube-support.

I want a mix of all the best games put together in one massive, ultimate video game.

Fallout 3's Massiveness

I want the world from Fallout 3. The map's fucking huge and every couple of minutes you run in to an interesting character that has a history and wants you to do something for them.

The ability to upgrade your character, weapons, clothes etc is also extremely well-done and is something my ultimate video-game would need to have as well.

Red Faction's Destructible Environments

This is something I've been waiting for for ages. Being able to smash a sledge-hammer through anything in your path is a shit-load of fun and we need to see this in more games right now.

Sure, there's almost always a level of destructibility in games but no-one has done it in the same dynamic, physics-based way that Red Faction does.

I just wish we were in New York rather than the bleak surface of Mars.

Uncharted's Story

Uncharted is easily the most fun I've ever had playing a video-game. The story is extremely movie-like. The characters are funny and have personality. Not to mention that the gameplay is absolutely brilliant.

The ultimate video-game would have everything Uncharted (and Uncharted 2) has :)

The Dude from Prototype's Powers

This, I guess, is a little matter of taste, but being a ridiculously powerful, super-human character like Alex Mercer in Prototype seems like a fuck-load of fun.

Together with a great story, great gameplay and destructible buildings that would just kick every other video-games ass. Ever.

The Scaling-possibility and animations from inFamous

Being able to climb everything in a video-game is another one of those things I think no game should be without. We've seen it in Assasin's Creed and Uncharted where they're both done amazingly, but I think the way inFamous does it is by far the most entertaining.

Also, the animations look absolutely stunning.

MGS4's Attention to Detail

The most beautiful game ever made(?). Needless to say the ultimate video game would have at least as good graphics as MGS4.

One Game to Rule them All =)

What if all games were open source? Every time you started developing a new game you'd already have the best rendering-engine, the best physics-engine, destructible environments, fine-tuned gameplay mechanics, tons of different 3D-models to pick from, entire cities (heck the whole world!) built in 3D.

Developers would just pick characters, surroundings and then they could focus on tying it all together and bringing a brilliant story.

Every time a game introduced something new (I dunno, like being able to skate like in skate) every future (and past if you update the engine) game would have that same feature.

That would be friggin wickid!

What's your ultimate video game?
