Coding Music

Published Friday 7th of January 2011

I like to listen to music when I write code and I think I'm not alone so I thought I'd share my favorite coding albums, songs and artists with you all.

I find instrumental music is the best to code to as it doesn't interrupt your thoughts the way lyrics can do. That's why I almost exclusively listen to jazz, classical music and soundtracks when I code.

Some of these albums are not instrumental but in a language I don't understand which is also ok :)

Obviously I use the absolutely brilliant Spotify so all these albums are available there.

Jazz

Only the last few years have I started exploring jazz music and I friggin love it. No other form of music can play with my mind the same way jazz does.

Sun Ra - The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra (1961)

Recently discovered Sun Ra and he became an instant favourite. I love this whole album but particularly the songs that feature a lot of flute like Where Is Tomorrow.

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (1959)

A classic jazz album. Favourites include Flamenco Sketches and So What.

Weather Report

Like Sun Ra also quite psychedelic. I love Mr. Gone.

Mulatu Astatke

Wicked Ethiopian jazz. Favourites include Yègellé Tezeta, Yèkèrmo Sèw and Gubelye (all featured on the Broken Flowers soundtrack).

Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani

Had a brilliant album called The Third Man on Spotify but it was unfortunately recently removed. They have more good stuff still available though.

Classical

I've listened to classical music for quite a while now. I'm definitely no expert whatsoever but I find it very relaxing and beautiful.

Phillip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

Phillip Glass writes some seriously heavy tunes. One of my favourites is Pruit Igoe.

Oxford Schola Cantorum

I haven't listened that much to this lot but Requiem, OP. 48: Pie Jesu is absolutely beautiful and the Oxford Schola Cantorum-version is the best I've found on Spotify.

Samuel Barber

An absolute classic, Adagio For Strings. I never get tired of this one.

Andrea Bocelli

The same goes for Andrea Bocelli's Con Te Partirò.

Soundtracks

I used to love Final Fantasy and I've watched most of Miyazaki's films. The music from both are top notch as well.

Joe Hisaishi

Has created a lot of music for the brilliant films by Hayao Miyazaki. Not a lot is available on Spotify though unfortunately.

Nobuo Uematsu

Has composed the music for a lot of Final Fantasy games. FF6 and 7's soundtracks are totally awesome but same as with Hisaishi not a lot is available on Spotify.

What's your favourite coding music?
